Fraudsters shop abroad with cloned Nigerian ATM cards.

Facts emerged on Tuesday that electronic fraudsters had been duplicating Automated Teller Machine cards belonging to Nigerian bank customers and using them to buy items worth millions of dollars from shopping malls in the United States.

Top officials of the Central Bank of Nigeria told our correspondent that the development had made Nigerian banks and their customers to be losing millions of naira to the e-fraud.

The development, it was learnt, had become so overwhelming and that top executives of the banks and senior officials of the CBN had to meet with a team of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission operatives led by the director of operations in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to sources close to the meeting, the banks are seeking the assistance of the anti-graft agency to help in arresting some of the fraudsters who are using the duplicated ATM cards in the US.

From the outcome of the meeting, the EFCC is set to collaborate with a sister agency in the US in order to effect the arrest of some of the electronic fraudsters.

The source disclosed, “Banks have been losing a lot of money to electronic fraudster cartels who are using customers’ ATM cards to fraudulently buy items across shopping malls in the US.

“Normally, customers should bear the loss but because banks don’t want the issue to come to the public so that the use of ATM cards will not be discouraged, they settle those customers by paying the money.”

Asked how the Nigerian ATM cards are being duplicated and used in the US, a source close to the development explained, “In Nigeria, we use chip and PIN, but the US still uses magnetic stripe. So, what those fraudsters do is to get the details of a customers’ ATM card, duplicate it and then go to shopping malls and start using it to buy items.

“When they are using the PoS in US shopping malls, all they do is to swipe the card and then payment is made. They don’t need to put any PIN. Through these, items are bought using Nigerian ATM cards.”

An EFCC source, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, confirmed the meeting and noted the anti-graft agency was set to work with the US government to arrest the fraudsters.

A top official in one of the top banks said the incidence of electronic frauds had been on the increase and the development was a source of worry to bank executives.

It was learnt that most of the frauds were being perpetrated in connivance with some bank officials.

The official recalled that prior to 2010 when Nigerian banks were still using magnetic stripe for ATM cards; the issue of using Nigerian ATM cards fraudulently abroad was prevalent.

However, when the banking sector migrated to the chip and PIN system, the problem stopped.

“However, the frauds have started again now in a new form of Nigerian ATM cards being duplicated and used abroad. The incidence is becoming very high now and something has to be done urgently to arrest the trend,” the banker added.

Analysts have said that the increasing incidence of electronic frauds may affect the growth of the cash-less Nigeria initiative.

The Deputy Governor, Corporate Services, CBN, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, recently said at a conference that the incidence of fraud involving bank officials had been on the increase.

Adelabu, who is a former Executive Director of First Bank of Nigeria, linked the increasing frauds in the banking sector to several issues, including the banks’ poor recruitment procedures and failure to prosecute workers involved in fraudulent activities for fear of reputational risk.

The Chairman, Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, Lagos branch, Mr. Abolade Agbola, linked the high incidence of electronic frauds to lack of integrity and poor staff conditions in the banking sector.

“When you see the fraud that happens and the trillions of transactions that take place daily, then I think the banks have to take the technology ahead, take the staffing ahead and then create a future for the members of staff so that they can know that they have a future in the organisations and that they can build a future,” he said.

IBB is a pathological liar and coward’ – Asari Dokubo

Sequel to scatting remarks against his person by General Ibrahim Babangida,  Asari Dokubo has described the former military President as a pathological liar.
IBB who blasted Dokubo for always threatening war whenever any issue about the Niger Delta is brought up, described him as a noisemaker who should go back to the creeks and declare his war against the State.
.
But Dokubo who also tagged Babangida a coward, said the statements from Babangida were uncharitable and unwarranted.
He pledged to carry out his threat if and when the opportune time for such an action arose.
He said, “Look, a lot of people have dared me and they have seen that for every step they dared me, I go a step further.
“There is time for everything. I am not going to follow his timetable. I have my own timetable.
“I have my road map. So when it’s time for me to do what I have to do, he cannot shout and he cannot push.”
He said IBB should be jailed for overthrowing a free and fair election.
“He cancelled an election that was free and fair. These are some of the things we have been saying that Nigeria cannot exist because when people like this talk, they offend our sensibilities.”
To literally add further insult to injury, Dokubo said IBB should be mindful of what happened to him the last time he donned a military outfit in Bonny area.
“We knew what happened to him. Up till now he is limping. He had to be flown out.”

Marijuana laced lube gives women 15-minute orgasms

A new personal lubricant that is laced with dagga promises a female orgasm that can last longer than the time it takes to make and eat a breakfast burrito.

This new marijuana based lube that supposedly facilitates the female user with a 15-minute orgasm has me (understandably, I think) sceptical.
See, while I like a good time as much as the next girl, I just can't see how a 15-minute orgasm would be practical or pleasurable. If you keep in mind that the following things happen to your body when you climax:
it seems like I’d injure myself or have a stroke or something.

Also, I’ve met quite a few potheads in my life, and the phrase “insane sexual energy” isn’t really the first thing that springs to mind when you think of stoned people.

The lube is made of medical THC oil in a coconut oil base, making it “delicious to eat”. Apparently the lube works to calm you and eradicate feelings of “stress and hate”. Now I’m just going out on a limb here, but maybe the appropriate time to have sex shouldn’t be when you’re filled with feelings of hate?

Anyway, the point they're trying to make is that cannabis is an aphrodisiac and this lube is gonna knock your socks off. If you can get it prescribed by a doctor, that is.
So what do you think? It sounds a bit snake oil-y to me, but let's put aside medical scepticism and focus on the supposed result. I did a quick poll around the sex positive, pro-orgasm women in the office and basically we were all in consensus.

Liberia: Dogs eat remains of Ebola victims

Residents from a township in the Liberian capital of Monrovia have witnessed dogs eating the remains of dead Ebola victims.
NewDawn reports that after witnessing the dog’s behaviour in the Johnsonville Township, some young men immediately contacted the health ministry, but no action was taken.
The men tried to kill the dogs, but some escaped the scene leaving residents in fear, according to the report.
According to allAfrica the incident happened after a standoff between residents and the Ministry of Health burial team which resulted in the hurried burial of suspected Ebola victims a few weeks ago.
Packs of dogs were seen pulling bodies out of the grave and hastily eating them, said the report.

Dr Stephen Korsman from the UCT medical virology division told News24 that dogs and pigs are so far the only domestic animals identified as species that can be infected with the Ebola virus.

According to Korsman infections appear to be asymptomatic, "this means that dogs won't get sick but they still could carry a potential risk through licking or biting".
Earlier in August protesting residents called for the Liberian government to collect bodies lying in the streets, some for up to two days.
The tropical virus has infected more than 2 600 people of which 1 427 have died, according to an AFP report. The UN has warned that the fight against the virus could last a further six months

Questions for Van Gaal after cup loss

Louis van Gaal has always said it could get worse before it gets better at Manchester United.
He couldn't have thought it would get this bad.

Barely two months ago, a jubilant Van Gaal was leaping out of his seat and high-fiving his Netherlands players after masterminding a 5-1 thrashing of Spain at the World Cup in Brazil.
Compare that to the glum, stony-faced figure of Van Gaal who remained glued to his seat during United's humiliating 4-0 loss to third-tier club MK Dons in the second round of the League Cup on Tuesday.

Even though United fielded a virtual reserve team, it was one of the most embarrassing results in the club's history and raised serious doubts about Van Gaal's 3-5-2 formation and the squad's strength, especially in defense.

9-year-old accidentally shoots gun instructor with Uzi

A 9-year-old girl accidentally killed an Arizona shooting instructor as he was showing her how to use an automatic Uzi, authorities said on Tuesday.
Charles Vacca, aged 39, died on Monday shortly after being airlifted to University Medical Centre in Las Vegas, Mohave County sheriff's officials said.
Vacca was standing next to the girl at the Last Stop outdoor shooting range in White Hills when she pulled the trigger and the recoil sent the gun over her head, investigators said.
Authorities said the girl was at the shooting range with her parents. Her name was not released.
A woman who answered the phone at the shooting range said it had no comment. She did not provide her name.
It is not known if the range had an age limit on shooting or if the girl was going through a safety class.
Ronald Scott, a firearms safety expert, said most shooting ranges have an age limit and strict safety rules when teaching children to shoot.
He said instructors usually have their hands on guns when children are firing high-powered weapons.
"You can't give a 9-year-old an Uzi and expect her to control it," Scott said.

Warning: Mobile phones can kill you!

Phones can literally kill you, proven in Ado-ekiti where a 15-year-old boy, Junior Abia, was electrocuted while using his mobile phone, reports The Sun
Junior’s elder brother was the first on the scene after the mobile phone shocked the boy to death.

The earpiece of the mobile phone was stuck to his ear while he was being electrocuted.

The brother used a long stick to remove the earpiece from Junior’s ears.

Fleeing soldiers return to Nigeria

                (Photo: file, AP)

There were indications that the 480 Nigerian soldiers who fled to Cameroon during a fierce gun battle with Boko Haram insurgents in Gamboru Ngala, Borno State had returned to Nigeria, Leadership reports.

Residents in Adamawa where the returning soldiers were spotted said they saw several soldiers, wearing torn uniforms and gloomy faces, returned with guns and some without guns while others were with armoured personnel carriers.

On Monday, about 480 soldiers of the Nigerian army were said to have fled to Cameroon in what the military authorities later described as 'tactical manoeuvre'.

The Defence authorities had explained that the soldiers "strayed" into the neighbouring country and therefore did not defect as widely speculated in the media on Monday.

Lesbians have more orgasms

When it comes to achieving orgasms during sex with a regular partner, straight women still lag behind men and lesbian women, a new study suggests.
Using surveys of single people, the Kinsey Institute research suggests that men, straight or gay, climax about 85 percent of the time during sex, while lesbians do so about 75 percent of the time. Straight females placed third, achieving orgasm during about 63 percent of sexual encounters.
Why the discrepancies? Basic anatomy and gaps in communication between partners may be key, the study authors said.

"We need to take seriously the wide variety of factors that may influence sexual outcomes, including orgasm, in individuals and couples," said study lead author Justin Garcia, an assistant professor of gender studies at the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction at Indiana University, in Bloomington.
The findings aren't definitive, he stressed, because they're based only on people's recollections about recent sexual encounters with familiar sex partners.
Still, the study does offer new insight into sexuality, Garcia believes. "In their 1966 treatise, Masters & Johnson suggested that lesbian women have more orgasms than heterosexual women," he said. "Yet there have not been many studies that have taken a careful look at orgasm outcomes across sexual orientation categories. We attempt to fill this knowledge gap."
To do so, the new study analysed the results of an Internet-based survey of 2,850 single American adults age 21 or older, almost 1,500 men and 1,350 women. The survey had higher numbers of gays and bisexuals than the American population because the researchers wanted to fully represent their experiences.
All the participants reported having sex with someone else over the past year, and each answered a question about the percentage of the time that they had an orgasm during sex with a familiar partner over the past 12 months.

Does the answer lie in oral sex?

The difference in orgasm rates between straight and lesbian women was significant, and the reasons why aren't clear. Study co-author Elisabeth Lloyd, chair of history and philosophy of science at Indiana University, said it may have something to do with the fact that penetrative intercourse is a more crucial part of sex for straight women than for lesbians.

The anatomy of women, especially the difference between the clitoris and the urinary opening, is crucial to the likelihood that a woman will have an orgasm through intercourse, she said.
Still, better communication between heterosexual partners couldn't hurt, the researchers added.

"The most successful means of increasing satisfaction has always been increased communication and attentiveness to the partner's responsiveness," Lloyd said. In other words, talk and pay attention.
Garcia agreed. He said partners of all types can help women reach orgasm by paying attention to "both spoken and unspoken communication."
"Some individuals may say what they want, or be willing to state what they want if asked by a partner; others may communicate with body language," Garcia said. "And for others it may take getting to know each other, both in and out of the bedroom, to understand what allows them to experience positive sexual outcomes."
And does all this mean that lesbians are more sexually satisfied than straight women? Not necessarily, the researchers sad.
"Satisfaction is different from orgasm. Many women can be sexually satisfied without orgasm," Lloyd said. "We can't infer that there are legions of unsatisfied heterosexual women because of this study. We'd have to ask them."

GARDEN CITY GATHERING OF THE TRIBES FOR SOYINKA AT 80

The popular adage that failure is an orphan while success has many relations was inhibited in the life of Professor Oluwole Soyinka as people from all walks of life struggled to be part of his 80th birthday celebration.

The activities started earlier in the year with  Pirates confraternity which he  co founded that organised a lecture and opened a web site for the Soyinka lecture series. Thereafter, Zmirage, WS/ICE, that has been anchoring his birthday celebration since five years took over and from Lagos, Osun, Ondo and finally in Abeokuta his home state several events were packaged to that effect, and it was great as many keyed into it.

After the Ogun lap of the celebration , the art community in Lagos took over again and the venue was the Freedom Park, Lagos where for five days they celebrated him with songs, drama, film, lectures, music etc. While many were relaxing after a long celebration, the government of Rivers State led by its art loving governor, Chibuike Amaechi organised a birthday dinner in his honour at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Port Harcourt.

Well attended event
The well attended event was graced by Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, former Cross River state governor, Donald Duke and wife, Gabriel Okara, Prof Biodun Jeyifo, friends and associates of Prof. Soyinka and a host of eminent Rivers State citizens. It will be recalled that while  governor Amaechi was in Lagos for the prize presentation of Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature, he promised to host Soyinka during his birthday and that was why the dinner was organised.

It was like another gathering of the tribes as people from many divides including writers, scholars, traditional rulers, diplomats, government functionaries converged at the government house auditorium, venue of the event to key into the celebration of the birthday of the first African Nobel prize for literature, The event was anchored by Rivers state Information Commissioner, Mrs Ibim Semintanri.

It was a harvest of tributes and performances as many tried to identify with the Nobel Laureate .First, it was the Rivers state dance troupe  with their Niger Delta motifs who took to the stage and performed in a dramatic way  some bits of what the Niger Delta was made of when it comes to dance.  The sang in English, Yoruba and ended it with one in their local dialect.

Thereafter, veteran actor Sam Dede who teemed up with his stage colleagues Nobert Young and Deinbofa Ere took over with greetings from the land of Kelekuru and presented the poem Ere wrote for Soyinka at 80. It was great as they hoaxed with their voices as they read.

Nobert Young was to mount the stage again, but this time, he was alone to thrill the audience as he read Soyinkas evergreen poem, the Telephone Conversation.
After that the quest relaxed

to a wonderful dinner while the legendary Tunji Oyelana, a long time associate of Soyinka who flew in from London because of the event performed  songs from Soyinkas plays including From Zia with love, I caught you in your trap and Soyinkas popular song , I Love my country which the audience joined in the dance.

Earlier on in his tribute, the host governor, Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State lauded Nobel Laureate,  Governor Amaechi said Soyinka rose to his towering height through hard work. Congratulating Soyinka at 80, Amaechi thanked him for honouring the dinner invitation, adding that the reason for same is basically because of the achievements that you have made globally, not just in Nigeria.

You have in the midst of our so many bad news brought good name to Nigeria. The good thing about your achievement is the fact that it has to do with hard work.
If you do not read, you will not be a good writer. Nobody can say you can just wake up and become a good writer. Reading begets writing and you must understand what you are writing.

The good thing about your own achievement is the fact that it has to do with hard work. If you dont read, you wont be a good writer. Nobody can tell you that once you wake up, you become a good writer.
On his part, Governor Fayemi also poured encomiums on the literary icon and described him as one of the worlds literary amazons.

He recalled that Prof. Soyinka fought so much for the liberation of Nigeria during the Sanni Abacha days in office and was for sometime even incarcerated. He listed Prof. Soyinka
s attributes of justice, fair play, dignity for the human person and faith in good governance as commendable virtues of the literary giant.

For Professor Biodun Jeyifo who had earlier prepared a paper for the toast, but was not allowed due what can be seen as a coup by the celebrant extolled the virtues of the man, Soyinka which he said he won as a result of hard work. He observed that Soyinka has ailment which he called Tribute fatigue and said it is an ailment that I pray to  have when I grow up like him.  He said that Soyinka is one of the last avant garde of the century. Recalling some of the  risk he has taken towards a better Nigeria, he stated that he is a radical who still remains radical at 80.

Responding to the toast, Soyinka gave the audience one of the greatest gift, the secrets of longevity, which he said lies in eating pepper and drinking grape. Wherever you go make sure you carry your grape and pepper. Make sure you drink less water, drink wine and take pepper, once you do that you fool humanity and live long. He added.

While the guest were busy with the stomach  infrastructure, the writer remembered one of the famous tracks of  one of the famous bands from East in the early 80s called Sweet Breeze titled Mr Beggar. Actually, according to the song writer, Mr Beggar has no towns man but when he is rich, everyone is his uncle..Kongi is not Mr Beggar, so he has many townsmen/women and that was why the world rolled out drums of celebration for his joining the club of 80 and according to Prof. Jeyifo who gave the toast, in 10 years time, we will gather, and in another 10 years gather again for his centenary celebration, Long live Kongi.

3 KILLED AS POLICE, OKADA OPERATORS CLASH IN LAGOS

Although normalcy has returned to the area, controversy has continued to trail the alleged killing of three people at Iyana School Bus Stop, along LASU-Iba Road, Lagos State on Friday.

Contrary to reports that commercial cyclists in the area attacked a team of policemen from Isashi Division led by the Station Officer (SO) and the Operations Officer, investigations revealed that policemen from the Division stormed the Okada park at Iyana School Bus Stop, seizing commercial bikes, an action that was met with heavy resistance from the cyclists who alleged that the ban on Okada in Lagos State did not apply to the area.
Trouble started when the officers allegedly started shooting sporadically which sources said resulted in the death of three persons.

A food vendor (Iya Bukola), who claimed to have witnessed the incident, told Sunday Vanguard the story:  We were all here when policemen came to the park and started seizing bikes from the Okada riders. When the Okada riders resisted, they started shooting sporadically and they killed two people instantly while several others escaped with gun shot wounds. When the shooting started I ran out of my shop for fear of being hit by stray bullet. It was while I was running that I fell down and sustained this injury on my leg, she narrated.

Lamenting, Abimbola Aliu, a commercial cyclist, said, See how they have changed the story, they said we attacked them. Is it possible for Okada riders to attack the police? The law of restriction on certain routes by the state government does not affect this place. So when they said they were attacked by commercial bike operators at a black spot, they should please show the world where the black spot is at Iyana School Bus Stop. We have been enduring all this intimidation and it has become unbearable. One of the victims was at the car wash when a bullet hit him.

Confirming the report, Lagos State Deputy Police Public Relations Officer (DPPRO), Mr Lelma Kolle, said police men from Isashi Division were detailed to storm a black spot after receiving series of complaints about criminal activities of hoodlums and, on their way, some Okada riders, who misconstrued the mission of the police, started pelting the team with stones and the police avoiding confrontation with the Okada riders, retreated and ran back to the station
Kolle said the Okada riders pursued the police to the station and attempted to burn down the  station.

He said to prevent them from carrying out their dastardly act, the police fired into the air to scare them away but two of the Okada men were shot in the legs.
As I am talking to you, the two injured persons are responding to treatment in hospital, he said.
He said that police preliminary investigation showed that some hoodlums who cashed in on the situation later engaged in a free for all and one of them was stabbed to death.

EVIL SON STRANGLES MOTHER, BURNS HER CORPSE

Twenty-nine-year-old Ekene Ucheagwu, a native of Ndikpa Awuka Ogbunka, Orumba South Local Government Area, Anambra State, who allegedly committed an abominable act is now gnashing his teeth in the custody of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Anambra State Police Command.

Ekene kidnapped his 65-year-old mother, Agnes, strangled her and then proceeded to burn her corpse in the dreaded Ogba Ukwu forest in the community.
As the nation was celebrating the last May Day, Madam Agnes was reported missing. The kinsmen, Sunday Sun learnt from the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr Usman Gwary, promptly suspected her son, Ekene, because of the lingering misunderstanding between him and the mother. Gwary said Ekene was summoned by the kinsmen to ascertain what he knew about the incident. Curiously, he told them to prepare a burial place for the missing woman.

It was further gathered that the problem between mother and son began sometime in 2012, and led to the hapless woman being beaten by the son, who broke her arm in the process. For such case of assault and battery, the police arrested and detained him for sometime at Umuchukwu Police Station. While in police custody, he was said to have sworn to deal with his mother whenever he regained freedom. True to his word, Ekene carried out the threat by beating her again.

At the office of SARS, where he is being held, Ekene spoke with Sunday Sun, accusing his late mother of being a witch, who used satanic powers to frustrate him and his siblings, preventing them from progressing in life.

His words: “My mother was evil. I killed her because of her wickedness. She prevented us, her children, from progressing. She was a witch and rained curses on us not to progress. She used her witchcraft powers to blind and attack us. I killed her because she planned to kill me because I called her queen of the coast. I beat her initially for her wickedness, but I am beginning to regret my action because my people have isolated me. I cannot forgive my mother. She had six children, three girls and three boys. My sister and brother died and she was behind their deaths.”

One of the kinsmen of the suspect, Josiah Okoli, commended the Commander of SARS, Supol James Nwafor, a chief superintendent of police (CSP) and his team for the quick investigative work that led to the arrest of Ekene in Aba, Abia State.
Okoli recalled that the police had given a firm commitment to arrest the perpetrator of the act before the late Agnes would be given a befitting burial. He expressed satisfaction that the culprit was eventually uncovered.
Gwary gave an assurance that the suspect would soon be arraigned in court.

Police detain wife over five family members death

The first wife of the late Mr. Aliu Adeoye, who died with his second wife and three children on Friday in Temidire community, in Sabo area of Abeokuta, has been detained in police headquarters, Eleweran, in Ogun State.

Adeoye, who was said to be a surveyor, died of suspected poisonous gaseous substance in a room with other victims, in his six-room bungalow at No 3, Ireti Akinbode Street in Abeokuta.

Some neighbours of the deceased had wanted to lynch the first wife on Friday, who they suspected was responsible for spraying the room with the poisonous substance, but she was rescued by the policemen from the nearby Ilupeju Divisional headquarters.

When our correspondent visited the community on Saturday, the neighbours insisted the first wife should be held responsible for these unfortunate deaths.
However, the only tenant in the house, Mr. Egbebi Abiose, survived the incident but he was still receiving treatment at an undisclosed private hospital in Abeokuta on Saturday.

The acting chairman, Temidire Community Development Association, Mr. Taofiq Akanni, confirmed that there was constant quarrel in the family of Adeoye.
He told our correspondent that some members of the community had to settle a rift in the family last Sunday.

The Police Public Relations officer in the state, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, said the first wife was currently being kept in police custody at Eleweran for two reasons.
Adejobi said, “The woman is with us for two reasons. The mob that gathered at the community after the incident wanted to lynch her. Again, she was accused of being the one who sprayed the gaseous substance into the room, where the victims died.

“We cannot ascertain the cause of death for now. There are allegations here and there but the police will do what needed to be done.”

Chibok Girls: BBOG Plans Mass Protests Tomorrow

The #BringBackOurGirls group, yesterday decided it would take to streets in Abuja tomorrow to mark the 126 days of the abduction of over 200 school girls in Chibok, Borno State.

The group, which was meant to embark on the protest today, which coincides with its 110 days of daily sit-out, stated that because it is a day of rest, the protest will be shifted to tomorrow when the members of the public would be around to participate fully in the protest.

The group also noted that as part of the programme for tomorrow, it would mount the protest at strategic location in the FCT and hand out fliers and pamphlets to the members of the public to remind them that these schoolgirls are still in the hands of Boko Haram sect members.

It would be recalled that the group took to the streets of Abuja on day 120 of the girls’ abduction   in order to re-awaken in the masses the fact that the Chibok school girls had stayed in the hands of the terrorists for 120 days .

The protest which was organised in commemoration of the 105 of the group daily sit-out also involved distributions of fliers and stickers to motorists and passersby.
One of the coordinators of the group, Hadiza Bala Usman had stated that the protest was aimed at urging Nigerians not to move on with their lives but to lend a voice to the demand for the rescue of the girls.

Doctors’ Sack: Reconsider Your Action, TUC Tells FG

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has appealed to the federal government to reconsider its decision on the sack of about 16,000 resident doctors in the country over their involvement in the on-going nation-wide strike by the Nigeria Medical Association.
The federal government had last Thursday announced the suspension of residency training programme in all federal hospitals across the country, pending when all challenges in the health sector are addressed.

The government had, in a statement by the deputy director (press) at the ministry of health, Alhaji Isiaka Yusuf, alleged that every effort by the government to contain the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), are being frustrated by the continued industrial strike action of the NMA.

But the TUC in a statement issued yesterday in Port Harcourt, urged the government to recall the sacked doctors in the interest of the country, adding that two wrongs cannot make a right.

The statement, which was signed by the chairman of TUC in the state, Comrade Hyginus Chika Onuegbu, however faulted the NMA for embarking on an indefinite strike even in the face of the dreaded Ebola disease, and appealed to the association to call of its strike.
It reads in part, “The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) Rivers State, appeals to the federal government to reconsider its decision on the resident doctors in the national interest, more so as two wrongs cannot make a right.

“We note that though the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) as a professional association has not acted professionally by continuing with its strike even in the face of the Ebola virus disease outbreak, suspending the residency programme will not solve the problem.”
