Girls found hanging from tree in India
The bodies of two teenage girls were found hanging from a tree in north-eastern India on Friday, police said, the latest in a number of reports of attacks on women and girls in the country.
The girls, aged 15 and 16, were found hanging from the ends of the same rope in Assam state's Karimganj district, near the border with Bangladesh.
Local people said the girls had been raped and then killed, but police said it was not yet clear whether it was a case of suicide, murder or sexual violence.
"We are conducting a detailed postmortem to find out what has happened," said district police chief PK Nath.
Two teenage cousins were found in May hanging from a tree in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. Although their families alleged they had been gang-raped and hanged alive, federal investigators said the evidence did not point to sexual assault.
There has been a spotlight on crimes against women and girls in India since the fatal gang rape of a 23-year-old student in New Delhi in December 2012.
Many of the alleged crimes have taken place in villages in rural areas
