A man gruesomely killed himself by tying his head to a lamp post before speeding off in his SUV – leaving his head behind.

Police in New York said the 51-year-old man hit the accelerator of his Honda Pilot after tying his head to the lamp post, the Mirror reports.

As his car flew forward, the chain tore his head from his body as the SUV continued on to smash other vehicles parked on the street while onlookers looked on in horror.
