Fans
of Erykah Badu would likely pay big bucks to see the singer live and in
concert.
So
when the R&B songstress stepped out in disguise Friday night to sing on the
streets of New York City, the idea that she would earn a substantial amount of
dough seems plausible.
"I
kind of always wanted to see what it would be like to sing for money on the
streets," she said in her personal video. "I'm going to find a good
place to stop and do it."
But
as strangers began walking past the singer, the 43-year-old was shocked to
watch what was unfolding.
In
the video that is seven minutes long, hardly anybody recognizes the talented
artist known for her hit songs like "Window Seat," "Love of My
Life," and "On & On."
As
a result, she earns a whopping $3.60.
"Please
sir, give me some money," she sings in her signature voice. "Sister I
need some more. I haven't sold a record in two years."
Unfortunately,
the New York crowds are tougher than we first imagined.
For
the record, Badu says she made the video herself simply as her own social
experiment.
"In
no way is this video a reflection of my feelings about homeless or unfortunate
families nor individuals who have no other means of survival in our
world," she commented on the video going viral on YouTube. "Instead,
this short film was shot w/ my iPhone and edited in iMovie for entertainment
purposes only and serves as a personal 'hustle' experiment for me."
Sorry,
Badu, but it looks like the crowd simply wasn't feeling you that night.
