Obese 4-year-old has to have stomach surgery
In India, a four-year-old boy was so fat his parents let surgeons at a clinic cut away 70 percent of his stomach, an procedure called a gastrectomy, in order for him to lose weight.
This made him the youngest patient to undergo such an operation.
Rishi Khatau weighed 98 pounds (44.4 kilograms) in September last year.
According to Daily News, his parents claimed that they tried everything to make him lose weight, but it just didn’t work and he stayed hungry.
The toddler was big enough to fit into adult sized shirts, they were the only clothes that fitted him at the time; his pants were the equivalent of a size 36.
His parents said they had no other choice, their son was slowly dying and they had tried many diets that didn’t work.
The surgeon told them that this was their last hope.
He was born a tiny baby, weighing as little as one kilogram, so his parents felt the need to overfeed him so that he could pick up weight and grow to a normal size. They said that at his first birthday he was a healthy weight for his age but only six months later, he began struggling with obesity.
His parents, Dipen and Henna, worried about his weight because he was having trouble breathing and was only able to sleep for 10 minutes lying down, so they halved his food portions but Rishi cried for more- often complaining that he was hungry.
After taking him to the doctor, he was diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome; this caused his body to stop burning calories. The doctor told them to put him on a strict diet and encourage him to do exercises, that didn’t work.
A family member then told them about bariatric surgery, she had undergone that. She claimed to have lost a lot of weight and said it was successful- she then referred them to a doctor.
After going for the operation, Rishi is a much healthier boy who sleeps through a full night, plays cricket and cycles with his friends. He is also on a healthy eating plan and weighs round about 30 kilograms at the age of five.
