Student detonates bomb in school !

Government Day Secondary School in Jambutu Ward, Yola, the Adamawa State capital, was thrown into pandemonium yesterday as students, staff and residents took to their heels following a detonation of a locally Improvised Explosive Device (IED) by a student.

Eyewitnesses said that the Senior Secondary School II student diffused the explosive while the lessons were in session at about 4pm, causing a number of his colleagues and teachers to flee for safety.

A female teacher, who doesn’t want to be named, said the teachers had to abandon students and their lessons to save their lives, while the students hurriedly left the school.

Efforts made by Daily Sun to ascertain the true position of the incident from the police command’s spokesman, DSP Othman Abubakar, were fruitless as he could not be reached on phone. He was said to be engaged in an official assignment elsewhere in the state.

Our reporter encountered same brickwall while trying to confirm from the Army Public Relations Officer of the 23rd Armoured Brigade, Captain Nuhu Jaafaru, as he could not also be reached on phone as at press time.

Similarly, there has not been an official reaction from the government officials as at the time of filing this report even as the suspected student who detonated the bomb could not be traced by teachers and colleagues.

Another male teacher who also pleaded anonymity, said the local bomb blast scared not only the students and the teachers, but the whole of Jambutu ward, describing the incident as unprecedented in the history of the school and the entire ward.

“We have always been hearing of the news of bomb blasts from foreign countries and of recent in Abuja, Maiduguri and Mubi as well as some parts of the Northeast of the country. But we are surprised that this could happen in the school.” he said
