NUPENG blasts power Discos for poor supplies

Workers in the petroleum and natural gas sectors are supporting protests by consumers against erratic power supplies.

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) said it was disheartening that power distribution companies (Discos) had continued to "cheat" and "short-change" Nigerians by issuing high electricity bills despite erratic supply of electricity.

NUPENG President, Achese Igwe, in a statement, said the union was concerned  consumers hardly enjoyed quality services.

“These fraudulent bills are putting more hardship, especially on the downtrodden, who cannot even afford three square meals a day, but now have to cough out money for electricity that they don’t get,” he said.

Igwe stated that the "exploitative attitude" was out of line with the energy reforms of the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan.

“We are disturbed that with the huge money budgeted and expended on power generation and distribution, there is still nothing to write home about, except perpetual darkness in many communities in the nooks and crannies of the country, only to be faced with huge bills," he said.

He therefore called on the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to ensure that the new electricity distribution companies provided power to the public.

"It is  was shameful to note that the NERC. Is concerned with only increase in tariffs," said Igwe.
