Wole Soyinka: I nearly shot myself as a child
Famous writer Wole Soyinka has said that his remarkable life might have been cut short 70 years prior to his 80th birthday when he almost killed himself.
The Nobel Laureate recently celebrated his 80th birthday reminiscing over a remarkable life and recalls a moment when it almost came to a premature end, Leadership reports.
Soyinka recalled waiting on his father to take him on a routine hunting expedition when his curiosity got the better of him.
He said he mimicked his father’s motion across the air rifle's trigger and it went off – exploding violently and nearly killing him.
He said his father did not reprimand his naive curiosity, because he had known it was an error of judgement to leave the gun within his reach.
Soyinka also remarked how his stubbornness as a child led his mother to believe he would find trouble in life.
When something seems possible, he tends to test its limits, the renowned writer explains.
